Summary

The article “End all immigration controls – they’re a sign we value money more than people” by Gary Younge argues for the removal of national borders and border controls. 

The article begins with Younge’s recollection of his teenage years, when he visited West Berlin and saw the Berlin Wall. At that time, even though Younge wanted to defend socialism, he realized that the existence of the socialist Wall was morally wrong. Younge describes the Berlin Wall as a symbol of confinement and talks about the feeling of imprisonment that characterized Eastern Europe at the time. 

Younge also discusses the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall. While he agrees that Western Europe encouraged the political freedom of former Soviet East-European countries, he also adds that people were still not allowed to move freely. Younge explains how East-European immigrants were not welcome in the West.
