In the exam prompt, you are asked to assess how successfully Gary Younge communicates his views in the article “End all immigration controls – they’re a sign we value money more than people”. 

First, consider Younge’s use of the forms of appeal and rhetorical devices. Younge mainly relies on ethos. He mentions historical data (ll. 10-20) and his personal experiences (ll. 44-48), all of which make him sound knowledgeable and reliable. Younge also uses pathos to appeal to emotions such as frustration, injustice, hope, and anger. These emotions are mainly connected to the isolation of Eastern Europe, but also to the difficulties borders pose to traveling freely and connecting with family.
