Allusions to historical events or people

Younge talks about a specific historic event – the fall of the Berlin Wall and its aftermath: “As country after country shed its Stalinist overlords and went into free-market freefall” (ll. 15-16). Here, he alludes to the ending of the Eastern bloc and to how those countries replaced socialism with capitalism.

Younge uses the Wall to highlight the West’s alleged hypocrisy. According to him, Western countries failed to welcome East-European immigrants, even after the East embraced the West’s economic system (capitalism), and they apparently shared the same values of freedom. Younge uses the story of the Wall to illustrate his point that the Wall might be gone, but there are still lots of national borders across the world.

Younge refers to a famous historical figure, Martin Luther King, and makes an allusion to King's famous speech “I Have a Dream” (ll. 30-32). In his speech, King expressed a vision of the future which many considered unrealistic or utopian. Younge uses the allusion to justify his own idealism. King dreamed of a seemingly utopian society – and achieved it. Therefore, Younge argues that his idea of no border controls is not that unrealistic after all.
