Summary

Jose Antonio Vargas begins his opinion article “ ‘Dreamers’ Put Their Trust in DACA. What Now?” by recounting a conversation he overheard between two women at the opening of the DACA processing system in Chicago. The women considered enrolling although they did not trust the government, one of them arguing she wants to work to help her mother.

The article continues with Vargas giving examples that show how difficult it is to be the child of illegal immigrants, because one cannot travel, or go to college, or seek employment in other states.

The writer recalls how he was rejected from a newspaper internship in 2002 because he was an illegal immigrant, and how he put his trust in the recruiter by telling her the truth and asking her to keep his secret.
