Excerpt 1 (from chapter 1 and 2)

The first excerpt in the textbook is from the first two chapters of the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. The excerpt starts when the main character, Jonathan Harker is supposed to change carriages for the last part of his journey to Count Dracula’s castle. Jonathan is a solicitor’s clerk from London who has been sent to Count Dracula to assist him with the purchase of an estate in England. 

The driver of Jonathan’s carriage is telling Jonathan that his next carriage has not arrived, and he offers to take Jonathan to Bukovina and return him to the meeting point tomorrow or maybe the next day. Right then, another carriage appears unexpectedly, scaring the onlookers. The driver is strange and mysterious and keeps his face mostly hidden by his hat. Nevertheless, Jonathan boards the carriage, and they head to Count Dracula’s castle. 

Jonathan feels as though the carriage is going in circles, and he becomes afraid. The howling of dogs and wolves and the loud wind add to the frightening atmosphere. Eventually, the driver crosses the Pass and takes a different road, meaning that they are no longer moving in circles.
