Setting

The two excerpts from Dracula by Bram Stoker are both from the first three chapters of the novel, and they are set in the same place at roughly the same time. 

The beginning of chapter two places the time setting as the 5th of May. Following the events of the narrative, we can see that the previous chapter takes place the previous day, and that the second excerpt is likely from a few days later. Though the year is not mentioned in these excerpts, we can guess by the fact that Dracula was published in 1897 that the story takes place sometime in the 19th century

In terms of location, it is revealed that Jonathan finds himself near Bukovina, which is a region of present-day Romania: “off they swept on their way to Bukovina”. He and the carriage driver have to go through a mountain pass to reach the castle owned by Count Dracula. 

Dracula’s castle is more specifically in Transylvania. Though this is not directly mentioned in these excerpts, the popularity of Dracula makes this a relatively well-known fact. In the text, Jonathan also mentions the Carpathian Mountains of Romania and Eastern Europe.
