Abraham Stoker (1847 – 1912) was an Irish author who also worked as the personal assistant of one of the most famous actors of his time, Henry Irving. Stoker is best known for his 1897 Gothic horror novel Dracula, which has become one of the most well-known novels in English literature. Though Stoker wrote other horror novels and non-fiction books, none achieved the popularity that Dracula did.

Below, you can read an excerpt from our study guide: 

In the scene from the second excerpt, Dracula effectively saves Jonathan from the three vampire women, ordering them to keep away from him. However, he appears to only do this because he has other plans for Jonathan first: “I promise you that when I am done with him you shall kiss him at your will. […] I must awaken him, for there is work to be done”. The angry Count appears terrifying to Jonathan....
