Jonathan Harker

Jonathan Harker is one of the main characters and narrators of the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. In the excerpts, it is revealed that he used to work as a solicitor’s clerk in London, where he lives. He has recently passed the solicitor’s exam, so is now technically a full solicitor himself. He has traveled to Count Dracula’s castle in Transylvania on behalf of his employer, Mr. Hawkins, in order to help the Count with the purchase of an estate in London. He is engaged to Mina Murray, one of the central characters of the novel, whom he briefly mentions in the two excerpts. 

Mr. Hawkins describes Jonathan as “a young man, full of energy and talent in his own way, and of a very faithful disposition. He is discreet and silent”. He also believes that Jonathan is helpful and capable to assist Dracula in his place. Jonathan is thrilled when he discovers what his employer has said about him, which shows he likely appreciates his employer’s trust in him and good recommendation. Mr. Hawkins’ good opinion of him also suggests that Jonathan is a hard worker who is good at his job.
