Political career

Politically, Trump has historically belonged to both the Democratic party and the Republican party in various periods and he has often been known to make political statements in the media, particularly on social media. Some of his viewpoints have been controversial and have sometimes contradicted his previous statements. On June 16th 2015, Trump formally announced his decision to run for president in the 2016 election, as a representative of the Republican party.

Early in the campaign many people did not take him seriously, but his support kept increasing and eventually he managed to secure victory in the election, despite his rival Hillary Clinton being the assumed favorite. In January 2017, he was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States.
