When you discuss Donald Trump's Republican nomination acceptance speech, you should also keep an eye open for interesting and controversial statements that are worth discussing in more depth.

Donald Trump’s speech was much debated at the time it was delivered (2016) and received mixed reviews. This is because his speech contains many claims that have been considered controversial and even demagogic (appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than to rational arguments).

For example, at one point, the speaker argues that he does not intend to be politically correct: “I will present the facts plainly and honestly. We cannot afford to be so politically correct anymore.” (ll. 32-33)

Political correctness (avoiding offensive language and behavior regarding vulnerable groups) is an important American value when it comes to governing and the whole electoral system. Consequently, his statement can be seen as defying American values and the very system that he wants to lead as US President.

In another instance, he talks about his political opponent, Hillary Clinton, being corrupted and controlled by business interests: “Big business, elite media and major donors are lining up behind the campaign of my opponent because they know she will keep our rigged system in place.” (ll. 164-166)
