The Republican nomination acceptance speech was made in 2016 by Donald Trump. At the time, the speaker was a well-known American television personality and businessman who made his fortune in real estate and constructions, who had often expressed his interest in politics.

He addressed the speech as the official Republican Party nominee for the US presidential elections, following the primary elections inside the party: “Friends, delegates and fellow Americans: I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States.” (ll. 3-4)

The US Republican Party, also known as the GOP, is a historical party defined by conservative ideology. The Republicans support traditional family values, market capitalism, financial conservatism, and a strong national defense, among other things.

Because the speaker was known as a controversial television personality and businessman prior to the electoral campaign, not many people believed he would win the primary elections, as he also points out in the speech: “I mean, they said Trump doesn't have a chance of being here tonight. Not a chance! The same people. Oh, we love defeating those people, don't we?” (ll. 569-571)
