Cons of co-parenting

The two texts only briefly hint at the cons of co-parenting and do not explicitly present views against it. For example, “Co-parents, but not romantic partners” hints that some of the cons might be the discouraging reactions from friends and family: “Some responses took me off-guard a little bit like ‘what are you doing’, ‘you know this is crazy’ like ‘are you giving up on love’” (ll. 22-23). Similarly, “Sperm Donor, Life Partner” shares this idea: “My family and friends thought I was nuts, they were like, ‘chill out, you’ll meet someone’” (l. 17). This could hint that children raised in such households might experience prejudice from people who do not understand their parents’ arrangement. 

“Sperm Donor, Life Partner” also suggests that one of the cons of co-parenting might be the difficulty of finding romantic partners willing to agree to this alternative lifestyle. For example, Pieke and Blue are “still both looking for romantic partners” (l. 48), just like Busic and Schulz from “Co-parents, but not romantic partners” (l. 72). This issue might be even bigger if two straight people or two same-sex gay people decided to co-parent since this could inspire jealousy in future partners.
