Composition

The text “Co-parents, but not romantic partners” by Makda Ghebreslassie takes the form of a series of interviews with people who have decided on co-parenting and with experts on the matter. The text also has a circular structure, as it begins and ends with pieces from the interview with Tatiana Busic and Brendan Schulz. 

The interview begins with a voiceover that introduces the theme: “An attractive woman meets a handsome man. Two years later, a beautiful baby boy. The epitome of a traditional family” (ll. 1-2). This creates certain expectations in the viewers, which will be contradicted, as we soon realize that the interview deals with co-parenting, a modern and alternative type of family.
