Extreme poverty

The short story “Chokra” by Numair A. Choudhury deals with the theme of extreme poverty, which is mainly illustrated by the narrator and Munmun. 

The story focuses on the consequences of poverty and how it affects people. Because of extreme poverty, people are forced to turn to desperate measures, such as sending children to beg. Moreover, Munmun’s example shows that people willingly agree to have their children mutilated because it might give them an advantage when begging. The narrator understands that their case is not unique and that poverty might push people to take similar measures: “It took a while before I understood.
