Characterization of the narrator

Outer characterization

The child narrator is the main character of the short story “Chokra” by Numair A. Choudhury. He has a sister named Munmun, who is three years younger than him. When the narrator and his mother collect Munmun from the man who cripples children, the narrator is six years old (p. 304, l. 1). In the second part of the story, the narrator, who is eight years old, mentions that he and Munmunhave been “on the streets for two years” (p. 306, l. 27). The narrator is poor, and he and Munmun “have been hungry so many days.” (p. 306, ll. 27-28) 

Inner characterization

The narrator is affected by the poverty he lives in. He is forced to beg with his sister and knows that Munmun’s pitiful appearance is an advantage (p. 305, ll. 12-14). On the streets, ...
