Narrator and point of view
The short story “Chokra” by Numair A. Choudhury is told by a first-person narrator, who is also the main character. The narrator presents the events as he experiences them. For example, at the beginning, the narrator is innocent and does not understand why his sister is kept in a kerosene drum: “My sister was born in a kerosene drum. I was six years old when she was ready” (p. 304, ll. 1-2).
In the second part of the story, two years after collecting his sister, the narrator is more practical and understands what happens around him:
We have been on the streets for two years now. As it is, we have been hungry so many days. I don’t know what we would have done if they hadn’t changed her. But I would never let them take her away if I had known. I was sm...
