Characters

The main character of the short story “Chokra” by Numair A. Choudhury is the narrator. Other characters include his sister, Munmun, and the woman who helps them for a night. The narrator is eight years old, and Munmun is three years younger. The narrator is not given any name, probably because the story wants to raise awareness of the fact that there are many children like him, who are forced to be in this situation.

The story also mentions the children’s mother and Saba Mia, who cripples Munmun and other children, so they could gain sympathy while begging. The two characters are not essential for the development of the plot but function as symbols that illustrate how poverty might make people do desperate things.

You can read a full characterization of the narrator, Munmun, and the woman who helps them in the following pages.
