Physical setting

The events described in the short story “Cat Person” by Kristen Roupenian take place in an unnamed city in the US, where Margot goes to college. She lives in a dorm room with her roommate, Tamara, but goes home to another town over the school break.

The movie theater is an important part of the setting, as it is the place where Margot and Robert meet. Robert makes wrong assumptions about Margot based on the movie theatre where she works which highlights the lack of communication between them. 

Robert’s house plays another important role in the story. In contrast with Margot, who lives in a dorm room, which reflects her youth, Robert lives in his own house, which highlights the age difference between Robert and Margot:
