Robert
Outer characterization
Robert is a character in the short story “Cat Person” by Kristen Roupenian. He is a 34-year-old man whose background is unknown to both Margot and the readers. He first meets Margot when he goes to watch a movie at the movie theater she works in. He is described as being “on the heavy side”, and it is mentioned that “his beard was a little too long, and his shoulders slumped forward slightly, as though he were protecting something”.
When he meets Margot for snacks, he is dressed with a “rabbit fur-hat” and a “thick, old-fashioned down jacket” that gives him a “lumberjack aura”. During their date at the movies, he is wearing “khakis and a button-down shirt”. Robert also lives alone in a house, presumably with his two cats. However, this is never revealed as true, as Margot does not know whether he actually owns cats or not.
