Analysis

In this part of the study guide, we will summarize the main points of our analysis of “The American Promise” by Barack Obama.

The main topic of Barack Obama’s speech is the American promise. At the time when the speech was delivered, Barack Obama was a senator and a political speaker.

The circumstances of Obama’s speech are represented by the 2008 Democratic Convention held in Denver, Colorado, where Obama received and accepted the party’s nomination for the presidency of the United States.

The audience of the speech is represented by the people present at the convention. However, the speech was also televised and broadcast on social media. The language employed by Obama in his speech is, in general, emotional and powerful.

When it comes to Obama’s intention with the speech, note that his main purpose is to accept the party’s nomination for the presidency of the US. Obama also intends to convince the audience of the importance of the American promise, but also of the efforts he would make to keep that promise alive as President.

You can find the full analysis of the speech on the following pages of the study guide.
