Miscommunication

In the short story “A Serious Talk”, Raymond Carver explores the theme of miscommunication. This is suggested from the title, which hints at the need for better communication. This theme is presented in connection with Burt and Vera’s relationship. 

Burt and Vera’s failure to communicate properly with one another is presented since the beginning, when they are shown opening Christmas presents. The two of them barely talk to one another and only communicate in brief sentences, like “it’s nice” (p. 16, l. 16) or “thank you” (p. 16, l. 16). After opening the presents, Vera goes into the kitchen (p. 16, l. 32), which suggests that she does not want to talk to Burt and that she is uncomfortable with him being there. Instead of trying to communicate with her, Burt acts impulsively and leaves after almost burning the house down.
