Symbols

The ashtray symbolizes the connection between Burt and Vera. The two of them bought the ashtray together from “a bearded potter on the mall in Santa Clara” (p. 19, l. 30), while they were still a couple. In Burt’s eyes, the ashtray belongs to them and should not be used by anyone else. When he notices two different types of cigarette butts in the ashtray, Burt becomes jealous and empties it (p. 19, ll. 27-28). At the end, Burt takes the ashtray with him, probably as a reminder of old times and the connection between him and Vera. The fact that he tries to drive away while still holding on to the ashtray symbolizes his refusal to let go of his relationship with Vera, which makes it difficult for both of them to move on with their lives.

The phone symbolizes Vera’s connection with another man. When she takes the call into her bedroom, her gesture symbolizes her wish to hide her new relationship from Burt. Out of jealousy, Burt cuts the phone cord, which is another symbolical gesture of ending Vera’s connection with other men.
