Burt

Outer characterization

Burt is the main character of the short story “A Serious Talk” by Raymond Carver. He has two children with Vera, whom he still considers his wife (p. 16, l. 5). However, the narrative hints that Burt and Vera might be either separated or divorced. This idea is also suggested by the fact that Burt does not live with Vera and their children. Burt’s appearance is not described in the story. The narrative also hints that Burt might have a drinking problem, as he drinks a lot of vodka when he comes to talk to Vera the day after Christmas.
