Style of language

The language used by Raymond Carver in the short story “A Serious Talk” is neutral. The author uses colloquial words and expressions, like “son of a bitch” (p. 21, l. 17) or “goddamn” (p. 21, l. 31), which highlight the characters’ anger and tension towards each other. 

When it comes to the choice of words, the author uses vocabulary related to Christmas: “Christmas day” (p. 16, l. 5), “presents” (p. 16, l. 9), “festive paper” (p. 16, l. 11), “fireplace” (p. 16, l. 30), “turkey” (p. 18, l. 17). The choice of words helps create a natural atmosphere and gives the story more authenticity. 

Short sentences are used throughout the story, as a feature of the author’s minimalist style: “He rapped on the glass. Vera was in her bathrobe. She looked out at him and frowned. She opened the door a little” (p. 18, ll. 1-2).
