Spiros

Spiros is a secondary character in the story “The Stack” by Rose Tremain. He is McCreedy’s Greek friend and, like McCreedy, he is also an immigrant. Spiros is also the owner of a small restaurant where McCreedy celebrates his birthday.

Spiros’ outer characterisation is very brief: “He’s smiling. He smells of his charcoal fire, and his face is pink and gleaming.” (ll. 202-203).

Inner characterisation

Spiros’ inner characterisation is constructed from the protagonist’s perspective and through his language and actions.

He appears twice in the story – the first time, McCreedy goes to his restaurant to make plans for his birthday. Spiros agrees to make steaks for McCreedy and his family, does not become offended at Hilda not eating Greek food, and even offers to make a cake (ll. 74-78). This suggests he is hospitable, und...
