Analysis

In this section, we will highlight the elements of our analysis of “The Stack” by Rose Tremain.

The story follows a linear plot structure, while including narrative techniques like backstory and foreshadowing.

The characters include John McCreedy, as the protagonist, and his wife Hilda, daughter Katy, and son Michael, as well as his friend Spiros, as secondary characters. Note that the narrator also mentions McCreedy’s friends from the pub, a girl he meets there, and Spiros’ wife Elena.

The events take place in different locations: McCreedy’s home and garden, the pub, and Spiros’ restaurant. The social setting explores such topics as the immigrant experience, male friendship, stereotypes, and perception of women and female sexuality.

The events are described by an omniscient third-person narrator who follows McCreedy’s perspective but also provides insight into the other characters’ minds.

The language is simple, mixing narration with dialogue, which helps the reader understand more about the characters and the events.
