Growing up
An important theme in the short story “The Sin Bin or Lucy’s Heart” is growing up.
Lucy is a teenage girl. Although she is intelligent, she lacks the maturity and life experience needed to make good decisions about herself. She is at an age when people tend to rebel against the influence of parents and seek out the influence of the peer group. In Lucy’s case, this comes into conflict with her education and her personality, which drives her to excel and learn, as well as with her pride in being one of the best students.
