Style of language

The language used in the short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence is neutral and easy to understand. The author does not introduce long descriptive passages, but focuses more on the dialogue between characters and on their actions.

Dialogue plays an important role in the story, as it highlights the dynamics between characters. When Paul talks to his mother, the dialogue shows Hester’s frustration and Paul’s curiosity and innocence:

‘Mother,’ said the boy Paul one day, ‘why don’t we keep a car of our own? Why do we always use uncle’s, or else a taxi?’
‘Because we’re the poor members of the family,’ said the mother.
‘But why are we, mother?’
‘Well – I suppose,’ she said slowly and bitterly, ‘it’s because your father has no luck.’
