Outer characterization

Paul is one of the main characters of the short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D. H. Lawrence. We are not told his age , yet we can assume that he is quite young at the beginning of the story, as he receives “the shining modern rocking-horse” as a present for Christmas. However, by the end he moves out of the nursery, and Hester tells him he is too old for the rocking horse. Paul has two younger sisters and lives together with their parents. 

Inner characterization

One of the main features that characterize Paul is his sensitivity. He is a sensitive boy, who is deeply affected by his family’s poor financial situation.
