Summary

The short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D. H. Lawrence begins with a description of Hester, a woman who finds it difficult to love her three children. Hester feels unlucky because her marriage is unhappy and because the family is in constant need of money. Although there are financial issues, the family wants to keep up appearances and leads an expensive lifestyle. 

The family’s financial issues begin to affect the children, particularly Paul, Hester’s eldest son. Paul asks his mother about the money problems, and Hester tells him that lucky people are rich, while unlucky people are poor, like them. Paul tells her that he is lucky, but Hester does not believe him.
