Summary

The short story “The Inevitable” by Daniel A. Hoyt follows the narrator, who is a folk singer on her way to a concert. She dislikes the idea of singing at the concert but she is ready to pretend to enjoy it.

Before the concert, the narrator sees the news of black teenager Michael Brown being killed by a police officer, and she mentions it during a break between songs. She tells the audience that she would like to know and play the rap song “Fuck tha Police”, but a man from the audience reacts strongly to this by insulting her. 

After the concert, when the narrator is selling copies of her CD, she notices that the man from the audience is waiting in line with his wife. He tries to challenge her views and the narrator replies by insulting him. His wife tells the narrator that he...
