Language

The language used in the short story “The Inevitable” by Daniel A. Hoyt is fairly easy to understand. At times, the author introduces terms from spoken language and slang. For example, the narrator calls the former police officer a “fuck-you-er” (l. 25) and uses slang like “fuck” (l. 21), “heck” (l. 13), “fuck off” (l. 39), “raising hell” (l. 12), and “doozy” (l. 101). Spoken language, like “yup” (l. 71), makes the story more authentic and helps readers connect with the characters. 

The narrator also uses several Christian references and symbols throughout the story, which are often used in connection with the narrator’s relationship with Lacey. For example, she wants to tell Lacey about the incident with the former police officer as a “form of penanc...
