Characterization of the narrator

The narrator is the main character of the short story “The Inevitable” by Daniel A. Hoyt. Her appearance is not described, but, based on the age of her daughters, we can assume that she is probably in her 40s:

He’s a good husband. (…) And when the pay sucks, he stays home with the girls, thirteen, eleven, and five: all prime numbers, and they all have blond hair, and two of the three have the same father, the other man I married. The youngest, Gracie, is the spawn of a certain folk singer who is widely known. (ll. 4-8)

The narrator is a folk singer, who was married before (l. 7) and who has three children(ll. 7-8). She is currently married to Drew, who is not the father of any of her three girls.

The story reveals that the narrator is rather dispirited, as she does not look forward to the concert: “I don’t want to do this Kansas show that I’m driving to and will not enjoy, but I’ve learned that you can grit your teeth so that it looks like a smile” (ll. 9-10)....
