In the short story, the narrator engages in a conflict with a former police officer because of her prejudice. She thinks that all police officers are racist and brutal and she automatically assumes that this is also the case with the man she meets at her concert. In the end, she leearns that he was not fired for police brutality but that he retired after seeing his partner die. This enables the narrator to put her prejudice aside and feels compassion and empathy for him...
