Analysis

The analysis of the short story “The Company of Wolves” by Angela Carter shows that the narrative has a chronological structure. The story is split into two parts. The first part presents several interconnected tales that set the tone for the longer second part.

The main character is an unnamed girl, whom the narrative follows throughout her encounter with a wolf. The encounter causes a change in the girl, who makes her first step towards womanhood by using her sexuality as a tool to stay alive.

The story’s physical setting creates a dark mood, which hints at the gruesome events that happen in the forest and in the villages around it. The social setting explores concepts such as feminism, patriarchy, and magic and superstition.

The events described in the story are told by a third-person narrator, who is outside the events. However, the narrator seems to be part of the community and has knowledge of what happens in the forest and in the villages.

The language used in the story is formal and complex. The author relies on descriptive language to enhance the dark mood of the story. The narrative is also filled with symbols, which add to the meaning of the text.
