Summary
“Streamlining” by Muli Amaye starts with Jocie and her brother Brandon, who are driving to visit their mother in Reddish. As Jocie and her brother talk about death, the woman thinks about how superficial and irresponsible her brother is, although he is thirty-one years old. She recalls how, while growing up, her mother always found excuses for Brandon’s irresponsibility and how she blamed Jocie for everything, including their father leaving them.
Jocie dreads visiting her mother and tension builds inside her. She looks at her brother’s teenager-like attitude and blames her mother for his upbringing. She tries to calm down thinking about her psychotherapy and yoga sessions, but she realises it is much harder to keep calm in practice.
She also realises that Brandon has a selfish, hidden reason...
