Style of language
The language used in the short story “Sleeping” by Katharine Weber is neutral and simple. The author uses short or medium-length sentences, which are more natural: “She would not have to change a diaper, they said. In fact, she would not have to do anything at all” (ll. 1-2). This example is also an illustration of the free indirect speech.
When it comes to the choice of words, several words and expressions add to the mystery of the story. For example, the expression “very sound sleeper” (ll. 4-5) is strange, as it is rarely associated with an infant. Then, the expression “absolutely please not” (ll. 6-7) creates a feeling of urgency and hints that Harriet’s babysitting job might not be what it seems.
