Analysis

An analysis of the short story “Sleeping” by Katharine Weber shows that the text has a chronological structure. The presence of foreshadowing elements hints at the Winters’ trauma, although this is never mentioned explicitly in the text.

The story’s main characters are Harriet and Mr. and Mrs. Winter. The narrative mainly focuses on Harriet and the unusual events she experiences at the Winters’ house.

The physical setting is the Winters’ house, where Harriet is supposed to be babysitting the baby named Charles. Charles’ room, where Harriet is not allowed to enter, plays a symbolic role in the story.

The events are told by a third-person narrator, who is outside the story and who adopts Harriet’s perspective. The narrator’s knowledge is limited to what Harriet experiences.

The story’s language is simple and filled with symbolism, allowing readers to think about the deeper meaning of the text.
