Theme

The main theme of the short story “Scene from Girlhood” by Kara Lark is growing up. This is also reflected in the title of the story. The title suggests that the adult narrator looks back on her girlhood and remembers important moments which made her gain a more mature outlook on life.

Samantha and Melanie are both on the cusp of adolescence, the age that marks the transition from children to teenagers. They are not fully mature yet, and their behavior reflects that, although to different degrees.
