Narrator and point of view

The short story “Rendezvous” by Daniel Ransom is told from the point of view of a third-person narrator who has access to both characters’ thoughts and feelings. 

However, both Payton and Kim are limited and subjective in their outlook. Payton believes the priest should have been sympathetic towards his murders, especially since he left flowers at the funeral home afterwards. Kim thinks that her little adventure will be a good story to tell (p. 52, l. 44), without considering how much she puts herself in danger. As the narrator shares the perspectives of each character in turn, we can say that the narrator’s knowledge is limited to what each character knows in their part of the narrative.

The narration is explicit about Kim’s reason for running away from home: “She hopes that this little surprise absence will make them more reasonable where her freedom...
