Framing

The short film “Reappear” directed by Tommy Clarke uses a combination of shots to effectively tell its story. 

First, the film uses several medium shots to give viewers an overview of Frank’s emotions. In general, medium shots help viewers connect to Frank in his journey of retracing his father’s footsteps. For example, a medium shot (01:26-01:31) captures Frank parking his motorcycle outside the café in Bournemouth. Here, viewers have a better look at his body language, but also at his surroundings. 

Another medium shot (04:44-05:02) portrays Frank and Christina walking on the pier, towards the telescope. The shot helps viewers focus on the building connection between Frank and Christina, who share some personal details about each other. 

The film also focuses on close-ups that reveal the emotions of the characters. For example, a close-up of Frank saying goodbye to Christina in this screenshot (09:58) shows him looking at...
