Reappear

Outer characterization

Frank is the main character of the short film “Reappear” by Tommy Clarke. He is in his twenties and lives with his mother. His father died recently, most likely of lung cancer, as Frank says that it was the cigarettes that killed him. Frank has light-brown hair and brown eyes. Christine remarks that he looks a lot like his father. He is wearing a white jumper, a black jacket, and black trousers. He also rides his late father’s motorcycle, which he has spent months making work. 

When Christina helps him recreate his late father’s photo, Frank changes into biker trousers. Although he does not say it, the film suggests that he changes his trousers to feel more connected to his late father, not only to imitate the photo as accurately as possible. 

Inner characterization

Frank has a close relationship with his mother. One of Frank’s reasons for retracing his father’s footsteps and recreating his photo is his attempt to lift his mother’s spirits and to make her overcome her sadness caused by his death. This idea is reinforced at the end of the film, where he is happy that she is out of bed (11:17-11:38) and that she is delighted to see the recreated photo.
