Summary

“One More Thing” by Raymond Carver tells the story of L.D., a man who struggles with alcoholism and is kicked out of the house by his wife, Maxine.

The story begins with Maxine arriving home and finding L.D. drunk. She finds him at the kitchen table being abusive to their fifteen-year-old daughter, Rae. The two of them are arguing, and L.D. is discouraging Rae and mocking her interests.

Maxine seems annoyed by both of them and tells them to shut up because she is getting a headache. However, L.D. and Rae continue to argue.

Rae tells L.D. that he can control his alcoholism by using his mind, since the brain is the most powerful organ in the body. L.D. asks if the brain can also control diabetes, epilepsy, and cancer. Rae seems to believe that and L.D...
