Rae

Rae is Maxine's and L.D.'s teenage daughter in Raymond Carver's short story “One More Thing”.

Rae’s outer characterization is very brief. She is a fifteen-year-old girl (p. 9, l. 3), and she is a student who refuses to go to school (p. 9, l. 13). She has a passion for astrology (p. 9, ll. 9-10).

Inner characterization

Rae is a teenager going through a rebellious phase. She refuses to go to school and says that no one can convince her to go (p. 9, ll. 13-14). In this way, she openly rejects the school’s and her parents’ authority. She also challenges her parents’ authority by taking a cigarette from her father and smoking it in front of him and her mother (p. 9, l. 25). The fact that the parents do not react to this shows that they have no control over Rae.
