Analysis

Here is a short summary of our analysis of “Open Or Wrapped” by Lynne Rees

The story's structure is made up from backstories that reveal more about the main conflict—the fact that Francine, the main character, has always struggled with men's and boys’ sexual advances. The men and boys who appear in the story, as well as Francine’s mother, are relevant for their attitudes to Francine.

The main events take place over 24 hours, mostly in the fish and chips bar where the protagonist works. The social setting illustrates aspects related to masculine socialising and the sexual objectification of women, as well as aspects related to parent-children relationships.

The narration is quite explicit, both in terms of language and the action. We know exactly what happens and how it happens, and even how Francine feels about it. Referring to its language, the choice of words is related to the characters’ activities (working in a fish and chips shop) as well as to sexual advances.
