Characters

The short story “Mink” by Marina Warner features four active characters: Donna, her husband, and their daughters, Bea and Ricky. At the end, Ricky’s daughter Lou is also briefly mentioned.

Donna is the main character in the short story. Her characterisation is constructed using the point of view of other characters and through her actions.

Donna’s attraction to glamour and her need to shine helps her become a more independent woman, and she becomes less dependent on her husband. However, in the end, the mink coat is left in a cupboard to rot, suggesting that her victory was only achieved on a small scale.

In what follows, we will focus on Donna’s characterisation. Also, we will look at the relationship between Bea and Ricky as presented in the short story “Mink” written by Marina Warner.
