Narrator and point of view

The short story “Leftovers” is a third person narration. The storyteller is outside the plot of the story, but he assumes the point of view of the main character, Mason.

The use of the character’s perspective is indicated by the fact that the narration only accounts for Mason’s flashbacks and thoughts:

“He can’t remember the last time they made love. It has become a memory game, recalling that occasion.” (ll. 39-40);

“He looks at her, says, I’m so sorry. Thinks, I want a divorce.” (l. 141);

“He was glad then, for her telephone, which she used to call 911 while he sat, watching the opening credits of a film they would never finish.” (ll. 86-87)

Using Mason’s point of view implies that the narrator assumes a limited-knowledge perspective. We only know what ...
