Part of your assignment asks you to focus on the main character of “Leftovers” by Nickolas Butler, Mason, taking into account analytical elements like setting, point of view, conflict, and main theme. In what follows, we will provide a characterization of Mason, including references to these analytical aspects.

Mason

Mason is the main character in the short story, which is conveyed using his point of view. The use of Mason’s point of view is suggested by the fact that we only get to read about Mason’s flashbacks and thoughts: “He can’t remember the last time they made love. It has become a memory game, recalling that occasion.” (ll. 39-40); “He looks at her, says, I’m so sorry. Thinks, I want a divorce.” (l. 141).

His outer characterization tells us that he is married to Renee, and they are financially “comfortable” (l. 46), suggesting they probably belong to the middle class. We also know that he previously traveled “the world” (l. 22) and lost “twenty pounds” (l. 22). We find out that he grew up in a two-parent family and that his parents never got divorced even though they were unhappy.

The references to him being in sports clubs with older guys and the fact that his mother died suggest that Mason is probably a middle-aged man: “He is on a bowling league, plays softball with a lineup of other older guys.” (l. 45).
