Setting

The events described in the short story “Jubilee” by Carys Davies take place in England, in the late 19th century. The story mentions Queen Victoria’s jubilee but does not specify whether it refers to her Golden Jubilee of 1887 or her Diamond Jubilee of 1897. Given that the story takes place after the Queen’s husband died in 1861, the story might refer to either of the dates. 

The historical period is significant because it has some consequences for the plot. For example, it means that Arthur's story about his wife's affair with a woman would probably come across as much more scandalous than today.
