Rhetorical devices

Biden uses several rhetorical devices in his 2020 victory speech in order to get his message across and connect with the audience. 

Allusion

Biden makes several allusions to various parts of the political context of the election in his speech. For instance, when he says he pledges “to be a president who seeks not to divide, but to unify” (l. 6), he alludes to Trump’s several messages which incited his supporters to violence. Similarly, when mentioning the “harsh rhetoric”, he alludes to Trump’s aggressive and provocative language.

He also alludes to previous activists whose work made the current situation possible: “It’s long overdue, and we’re reminded tonight of all those who fought so hard for so many years to make this happen” (l. 23). In doing so, he shows respect and recognition for those who came before him.
